The Pummerin
The Pummerin is Austria's largest and heaviest bell: it weighs 21,383 kg and has been hanging on the north tower since 1957. The "old" Pummerin from 1711 fell into the depths during the fire of St. Stephen's Cathedral in 1945.
The "new" Pummerin was recast - partly from old material - in St. Florian in 1951 and brought back to Vienna in 1952. It was a gift from the province of Upper Austria to St. Stephen's Cathedral.
At 68.3 metres high on the north tower, the Pummerin is an imposing piece of history of the Cathedral of St Stephen.
