Hochosterwitz Castle

7 The Khevenhüll Gate

The gates of Hochosterwitz Castle

Hochosterwitz Castle Khevenhuellertor

The most magnificent of all the gates. On the solid Renaissance frame of the archway, the white marble keystone shows the Khevenhüller coat of arms, a lion's head and 1580, above it in relief the bust of the builder Georg Khevenhüller, armed but without a helmet, holding the staff of command in his right hand, his left hand on his hip, his sash over his armour.

George had himself portrayed here as an army commander, commemorating the Turkish campaign of 1578, which is described in detail in Megiser's regional history according to the records of the pastor Chistalnig.

The depiction is similar - and always with the field bandage - as a kneeling knight made of wood in natural size in the castle collections and on the red marble tomb lid in the Villach parish church as a reclining relief figure.
