Since the establishment of the National Park in 1996, the ecological conditions of the Danube floodplains east of Vienna have already been improved in important areas. Further projects and cooperations will continue to improve the quality of the river landscape with comprehensive measures in the future.
castleORTH National Park Centre
The schlossORTH National Park Centre is your National Park information point, excursion destination and event venue. The Schlossinsel adventure area is particularly popular with guests, it introduces animals and plants of the river landscape.
Welcome to the gateway to the Au
Orth Castle has an eventful history. Built in the 12th century as a medieval moated castle and once the hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolf, it was used as a museum from 1950. In 2005, after reconstruction and renovation, it was reopened as the schlossORTH National Park Centre.
The information point and visitor centre of the Donau-Auen National Park are now located here. Individual guests, groups, kindergartens and schools are welcome. You will find here under one roof:
The Danube Floodplain National Park preserves the last large floodplain landscape in Central Europe on an area of more than 9,600 hectares. With its establishment in 1996, this jewel was placed under sustainable international protection. Since then, nature has been able to develop here free from economic constraints.
By means of innovative revitalisation projects, side waters are reconnected to the river and natural Danube banks are promoted. The riparian forests are developing into species-rich forest wilderness. According to the motto "Free river. Wild Forest", the original natural character is being restored to the floodplain landscape. Rare animal and plant species have returned or improved their populations.
With its diverse range of visitor facilities, excursions and events, the Danube Floodplain National Park can be experienced by guests, is a regional centre for environmental education and a popular destination for excursions.
