Winter exhibition at the Museum am Dom Sankt Pölten
„Heaven, hell & holy night. The St. Pölten nativity play“
The winter exhibition at the Museum am Dom St. Pölten can now be experienced virtually and invites you to return to the origins - to the birth of Christ.
The great arc of Christian salvation history stretches from Christmas to Easter.
At the centre of the exhibition is the St. Pölten nativity scene, whose figures have been presented in their entirety for the first time in around 100 years.
In the original 23 scenes, lovingly designed rod puppets tell the Christmas story - humorously, with interspersed songs.
In addition to biblical figures, impressive figures such as the Habergeiß, a demonic goat figure, and Death, who encounter King Herod, also appear.
A mechanical nativity scene from the 1950s also sets the Christmas story in motion: sheep, shepherds and deer circle around the nativity scene.
A hands-on station invited visitors to slip into the role of the players themselves and bring the figures to life.
The exhibition makes it possible for the first time in a long time to see the figures, which are spread across several museums, together and to place the St. Pölten nativity scene in the wider context of the nativity scene tradition in Lower Austria.
