The Cistercian monastery of Rein (lat.: runa) was founded in 1129. It is the oldest Cistercian monastery in the world that has been an active monastery without interruption. It was founded by Margrave Leopold I of Steyr during the lifetime of St. Bernard.
The magnificent exhibition room between the basilica and the library wing is decorated with ceiling frescoes by Joseph Amonte from 1753 and shelves from the monastery carpentry.
