The Nickel Museum in the Upper Valley
The only preserved historical smelting furnace in the Eastern Alps.
The nickel museum in Hopfriesen makes traces of the past visible, namely aspects of the region's impressive mining past.
It brings hidden treasures to mind, namely the ores that were mined and smelted in the Hop Giant.
It documents the "dangerous day's work" of the miners of the 18th and 19th centuries, the exposed mining conditions and the laborious transport of the ores from the galleries into the valley.
It brings to light a part of the past that is unknown to most visitors to the region, but also to many people who live here: the era of the 18th and 19th centuries, when mining experienced a new boom with the extraction of cobalt and especially nickel.
The unique relic, the nickel smelting furnace itself, becomes the main exhibit in the museum. The museum building - designed as a walk-in showcase in the middle of the landscape - draws visitors' attention to and arouses their curiosity about the past and - through the presentation of current nickel products - also builds bridges to the present.
Embark on a virtual voyage of discovery and let the historical traces in connection with the unique natural landscape have an effect on you during an on-site visit.
