About Trautenfels Castle
Trautenfels Castle stands as a landmark of the middle Enns Valley on a rocky spur at the foot of the Grimming.
As a department of the Joanneum, founded by Archduke Johann in 1811, Trautenfels Castle is one of the youngest houses of the oldest and second largest museum in Austria, which has been called the Universalmuseum Joanneum since 2009.
The first documented mention of the site as "Burg Neuhaus" dates back to 1261.
Trautenfels Castle Landscape Museum
Trautenfels Castle stands for the cultural and natural history of the Liezen district and is also referred to as the "Joanneum in miniature" because of the complexity of its collection, thematic focuses and special exhibitions.
The Landscape Museum, set up as a permanent exhibition, tells of the cultural and natural history of the Liezen district, Austria's largest district with an area of 3,315 km², in 13 rooms arranged kaleidoscopically.
Each themed room is dedicated to a special focus that relates to the region and the museum's collection, bringing together objects from the fields of culture, man and nature.
Views of the landscape enable connections and localisation of the content both internally and externally. The collection comprises over 45,000 objects, of which about 1000 are presented in the permanent exhibition.
